The Twin Symposiums in 2025
The 34th Clean Coal Day International Symposium (2025)
Theme: Decarbonization and Just Energy Transitions
The past decade saw strongest-ever international criticism against coal energy. In the same period, global demand for coal was steadily growing as emerging countries needed coal to bolster their economic growth and development. Now many are talking about coal phase-out and others even say we must leave coal right away.
However, looking at the world, we still have over 700 million people who are yet to enjoy the benefit of electricity. In some countries especially emerging economies balancing electricity sources for grid stability are not sufficient without coal, due to affordability and supply reliability. Also, it is forecasted that demand from data centers by the accelerated AI introduction will push up the global power demand, which may not be addressed by renewable energy only. In consideration of this situation, we may not lightly refuse to use this one of the available fuels.

The 34th Clean Coal Day International Symposium is to explore how to proceed with coal utilization with the growing electricity demand that will see steady or even surging increase while the global society is heading toward carbon neutrality. It is clear eliminating the potential of environmentally compliant utilization of coal make little sense, and that time has come for us to pursue afresh diversified, just transition pathways all of which will finally reach the global goal of carbon neutrality. That is why the theme of the 34th symposium this time is "Decarbonization and Just Energy Transitions."

Energy Security with Decarbonization Symposium 2025
Theme: Coal Strategy for a New Era - The Role of Coal in Energy Security
Amid increasing global attention to energy security, the Energy Security with Decarbonization Symposium will examine the strategic role of coal within the broader context of a sustainable and resilient energy supply. The discussion focuses on the upstream perspective, particularly the importance of ensuring a stable coal supply in an evolving global energy landscape. The session will consider how coal, as part of a diversified energy mix, contributes to energy security while supporting sustainable economic development.

Both symposiums feature live voting system that will help participants deepen understanding on contentious points that are being presented and discussed by speakers and panelists right at the sessions, which is conducive to further the outcomes of the events.

Associated Events
Side Meetings (one-on-one meeting)
Side meetings (one-on-one meeting) will be held in a room adjacent to the symposium venue, providing an opportunity for discussions on focused topics between government institutions / organizations / corporations as per requests from speakers and/or participating organizations.Further details are available on our website. Please visit our website to register for the meetings. Registration is also open to those who are not presenting.

JCOAL e-book 2025
Following these Symposiums, the outcomes of the discussions have traditionally been disseminated worldwide through "JCOAL's Statement".
This time around, a new initiative will be introduced: a JCOAL e-book 2025, which will serve as a platform for speakers and companies to showcase their activities toward carbon neutrality. The JCOAL e-book 2025 will be globally shared and distributed to all stakeholders. Further details are available on our website. Registration is also open to those who are not presenting.

Post-Conference Webinar (PCW)
After the symposiums, a post-conference webinar with Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method is scheduled tentatively in November to further discuss on focused topics. Target region of the PCW is ASEAN region. Further information will be provided in due course.

Reference Information: About Clean Coal Day
In 1991, the then Ministry of Industry and Trade (MITI), now Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) established 5th September as Clean Coal Day, which was deemed to be conducive to outreach activities for the sake of appropriate and well-informed recognition of coal as one of the crucial energy sources.
As such, the first Clean Coal Day International Symposium was held on the very day of 1991 involving a wide range of stakeholders from upstream to downstream of the coal value chain. Since then, the event was held annually to date.
Since the early years of its history, Clean Coal Day involved not only the main conference but also publicity and educational events to make general public, researchers and students well understand the values and roles of coal as well as innovative technologies to develop and utilize coal in an environmentally compliant manner.
This part of the Clean Coal Day activities is deemed to be crucial, since without continued education and updating of people, we may not go on sustainable coal utilization that bolsters economic growth.

In 2023, in view of the recent global situation around energy transition, the Clean Coal Day International Symposium that used to cover both upstream and downstream was split into two conferences: one about downstream and the other about upstream. The former deals with clean and innovative utilization and conducive technology information, which are crucial for well-informed acknowledgement of values and roles of coal and its utilization as well as relevant technology, while the latter discusses sustainable supply with focus on energy security. Sessions of the twin symposiums are well designed to serve concerns and interests of coal energy experts and an extensive range of audiences.

For details about the conferences and new initiatives, please visit our symposium website. Registration for the symposium, as well as applications for side meetings and the JCOAL e-book 2025, are available on the website.
