Announcement of "Clean Coal Day 2013 International Symposium" Scheduled on September 4-6, 2013

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, the operation rate of nuclear power plants in Japan has suddenly dropped because of mounting concerns over the safety of nuclear power generation, and the consequent shortfall in power supply has been compensated by increased operation of LNG and oil-fired thermal power plants. However, the rising power costs due to increased procurement of these fossil fuels is placing heavy burden on the economy. Under these circumstances, the importance of coal has been being recognized again from the perspective of energy security as a highly reliable energy resource offering sustainable supply and economical efficiency.
Coal is playing an important component role not only in the Japan's energy diversification but also an energy resource in the world, and according to the outlook for energy, the demand of coal continues increasing mainly in China, India, Southeast Asian countries. Therefore, efforts to get sustainable supply are becoming increasingly important. It is also necessary to keep an eye on recent trends such as the strong influences to the global coal market from the US shale gas and oil.
On the other hand, at coal utilization in energy, effective mitigation measures to resolve global environmental issues, not to mention appropriate pollution-control measures implemented at the local area. It is about time that we carry out the worldwide development, introduction and dissemination of clean coal technologies (CCT) positively on a business basis, to utilize coal as a sustainable energy resource in the long term. In addition, we need to make more active efforts to realize Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as well.
In light of the current situation, the guest speakers and the participants from various countries related with coal will discuss on common issues from their viewpoint in the symposium.
We look forward to your active participation.
