September 1, 2021- ASEAN Energy Center (ACE) and JCOAL in close cooperation with ASEAN Forum on Coal (AFOC) have compiled "ACE-JCOAL Joint Strategic Report on the New Role of Coal-Fired Power Plant in the Era of Energy Transition".
Having been working together under the 4th MoU, ACE and JCOAL furnished a policy brief (PB) on the same subject in November 2020.
The concept expressed in the PB has been developed into the Report this time. ACE-JCOAL team discussed time and time again, trying their best in coping with the daunting tasks they had to face during the course of deliberating the optimal energy transition pathways and the role of coal fired power plant. ACE provided a comprehensive overview and confirming the policy direction, while JCOAL furnished related technology information and best practices. GFI (Grid Fluctuation Index), a potential policy tool newly developed by JCOAL is a part of such knowledge sharing.
Utilizing in the cleanest possible ways all available electricity generation sources constitutes an important part of ASEAN energy policy. And most of ASEAN member states (AMS) as emerging economies are required to work out respective energy transition pathways with sacrificing neither of economic growth nor environment as well as climate change actions. JCOAL respects such a view of ASEAN, and tried to provide knowledge, ideas, technology information and best practices that would cater to the requirements of AMS to have their coal fired power plants remain a part of their strategies of renewable energy integration and energy transition.
We hope that this report will well serve AMS as one of the useful references to identify the optimal and cleanest transition pathway. It would be our utmost pleasure to have further opportunities to work together with ACE, AFOC and AMS while they take the journey of energy transition toward carbon neutrality.
